Last year, three members of Pussy Riot, a feminist punk rock collective, were arrested for staging a "Punk Prayer" at a Moscow cathedral. This action revived the tactics of the American "Riot Grrrl" movement of the 1990s, which originated in Washington DC as a way for girls and young women to use their voices and bodies to challenge the status quo of discrimination and violence against them. Explore the Evolution of Riot Grrrl's feminist, punk activism and its connections to earlier musical and social movements. Consider whether punk rock tactics are relevant in fighting discrimination against women today. This will be a multimedia presentation by Professor Wahl and the presentation will be followed by a discussion.
